BIG SUR, Monterey County — October 26, 2026. Visitors to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park have some restored access following the region’s fire disruptions, but the reopening is partial. California State Parks’ October restrictions update says the Partington Cove Trail and certain day-use facilities are open again, while backcountry trails east of Highway 1 remain closed indefinitely during suppression and repair operations.

Partington Cove is a popular coastal destination, so renewed access is welcome news to visitors and nearby businesses. But opening one trail does not authorize hikers to enter closed forest routes, burned slopes or work areas. Trail conditions may also change with rain and ongoing fire recovery. People should review the official state parks page, reserve any services requiring advance booking and follow Caltrans Highway 1 updates before setting out. The word ‘indefinitely’ means there is no reliable public reopening date yet, not that closures are necessarily permanent.
