BIG SUR, Monterey County — October 26, 2026. Travelers on Highway 1 near Torre Canyon Bridge are being warned that post-wildfire slope stabilization can cause daytime delays seven days a week, not just on weekdays. Caltrans updated the schedule October 15: crews will remove loose rocks and brush above the highway as part of slope-safety work, generally from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

One-way traffic control may require vehicles to wait up to approximately 20 minutes. The agency estimates this part of the work will run roughly five weeks from its October 13 start, but field conditions could change the timeline. This is a general daily-work warning, separate from the specific full closure Caltrans has announced for October 29 and covered previously by Big Sur News; drivers should check both notices rather than assuming all of Highway 1 is fully closed every day. Current real-time road conditions are available on Caltrans QuickMap.
