BIG SUR, Monterey County — October 26, 2026. Caltrans has scheduled two daytime periods of full Highway 1 closure near Torre Canyon Bridge for Thursday, October 29. The agency says motorists should avoid the affected section if possible because work to install protective wire mesh on hillsides above the route requires stopping through traffic.
Under the current plan, Highway 1 will be closed from 8 a.m. until noon and again from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. between highway post miles 39 and 40. Caltrans says the roadway will reopen for one hour at midday, from noon to 1 p.m. These times are conditional on weather and operational needs.
Why crews are working above the roadway
The slope-safety project responds to conditions following the Timber Fire and is intended to prepare the corridor for winter. Workers will install wire mesh netting to help stabilize areas where loose material could threaten travel. Caltrans has said it will coordinate with emergency responders and school districts when passage is needed during the closure.
People living or working along the Big Sur coast should distinguish this scheduled daytime shutdown from permanent Highway 1 closure notices elsewhere along the coast. Roadway conditions can change in real time. Advance electronic signs are expected to warn approaching drivers.
