BIG SUR, Monterey County — October 27, 2026. Highway 1 remains open in many Big Sur sections, but temporary traffic controls will affect some trips. October 27 update: California has also announced a new Highway 1 storm-preparedness task force ahead of potential El Niño weather. That new statewide order is separate from the existing Mud Creek work notice and does not change the published closure dates or real-time road conditions. Related context added October 27, 2026. The Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s latest Cone Zone Report lists emergency work at Mud Creek from October 5 through November 13, 2026, with alternating one-way traffic from approximately 6:30 a.m. to noon.
What drivers should expect
The agency warns of possible delays of around 10 minutes. Work hours and traffic restrictions can shift with weather or site conditions. Motorists should follow traffic control staff and signed signals rather than rely on last week’s schedule as a real-time road report.
Other Big Sur work
The same October 25–31 notice identifies drainage activity around Rat Creek, bridge work near Nepenthe, and drilling at Limekiln Creek Bridge. These are separate projects; their lanes and hours should not be combined into a claim of one continuous Big Sur highway closure. Because Highway 1 offers few alternatives in some stretches, road restrictions can affect residents’ medical visits, delivery schedules and tourism.
Use Caltrans QuickMap for current state-highway conditions and TAMC’s weekly Cone Zone report for scheduled work. Big Sur News.
Editorial note: This October 27 article presents a published planned restriction, not a promise that work is active every moment within the listed date range.
