BIG SUR NEWS | LOCAL REPORTING · 2026
One of Big Sur’s biggest transportation developments of 2026 came on January 14, when Caltrans reopened the Highway 1 segment damaged by Regent’s Slide. The reopening reconnected the coastal road between Carmel and Cambria after a prolonged landslide-related interruption.
A long closure ends
Regent’s Slide occurred in February 2024, complicating access that was already affected by earlier landslides. Caltrans announced that the route would reopen at noon January 14, 2026, ahead of a previously estimated March 30 date. The restoration was a major milestone for residents, workers, visitors and delivery operators who rely on Highway 1.
The extraordinary repair effort
The state described remote-controlled excavation equipment, deep slope reinforcement and continuous monitoring in one of California’s most unstable coastal sections. Engineers used thousands of steel reinforcements, some extending up to 60 feet. The complexity explains why a single washed-out hillside can disrupt a large part of the community’s travel network.
The economic significance
Reopening can allow travelers to reach a larger set of local businesses without long detours, but a completed road project alone does not establish how much revenue any particular business has recovered. Follow-up business interviews and local sales or lodging data would be needed to measure the actual economic effect.
Don’t mistake a reopening for permanent access
Caltrans warned in January that weather-related debris removal and other work could still require intermittent closures. Later wildfires brought additional restrictions in 2026. Readers should check current Highway 1 conditions before planning a trip; this article describes the January milestone rather than promising that all segments are open today.
